A “Going Wide” Update and Introducing Kink Tags

It’s been a while since our last update, so this is just a quick post to let you know where things are, what we’ve been working on, and what to expect going forward!

In the last post, I talked about how Smoldering Books was going wide to other retailers. So far this has been coming along okay, with a few bumps along the way. I’m happy to announce that full catalogs for author’s Oliver Thrust and Theo Stone have gone live on most other retailers. You may notice that all the links haven’t been updated yet. Uploading is a lot of work, but we’re getting there! Read More

Going Wide, A New Era of Smoldering Books

Another update on our publishing situation. Previously we talked about the changes being untenable, and now we’re announcing that Smoldering Books is going wide. All our titles have been removed from the KDP Select program and are no longer Amazon exclusive. Over the next few weeks expect to see our titles popping up on other retailers such as Smashwords, Google Play, Nook, Kobo and more.

This is an exciting new endeavor, and we’re proud to be able to offer on multiple platforms. It’s a big change, so there might be some speed bumps along the way. Of course, all our Smoldering Books are still available on Amazon, but being in an exclusive agreement where the pay rate is variable and opaque is no longer something we’re interested in. So onwards to the future, and I hope we’ll be seeing you again. From everyone here at Smoldering Books, I look forward to this exciting, dynamic new chapter.

Keep your eyes out for titles on the major platforms, and there will be more fun, fresh, exciting and smoldering new announcements in the coming weeks. I’ve been making improvements and tweaks to the website, with some great new features coming soon.

If this was a move to try and push out short writers well we’re not going anywhere. We’re going everywhere.

A Quick Post about the new KDP Select Payment Scheme

Just thought I would write a quick post about what’s been going on in the world of self-published authors. As you may know Amazon recently announced a new per page payment scheme for indie authors enrolled in KDP Select. Today we received an email that suggested the per page payment would be less than half a cent This means that projected sales are much, much lower than ever before. Smoldering Books is no exception to this cut and at this stage we’re keeping our options open and hoping that Amazon releases more information about the payment rate.

We will keep you updated with our decisions, but we are actively looking at removing all titles from the KDP Select program in order to publish on other stores. This is to ensure that our authors and all indie authors, get a fair compensation for their efforts, and can continue to provide the books you love. If you want to read more Selena Kitt has a great post summarising what you can do to let Amazon know. We need more information and to not have our livelihoods pulled out from under us.

Thanks for your support.

Part 3: Romance Book Cover

If you’re looking to take a little more time to create something a little bit more visually interesting and professional then read on. Many Romance book covers have a unique visual style all of their own and are general longer works than in erotica. So more time and care can be spent crafting the perfect cover.

The techniques discussed below are not genre exclusive, but there is a particular visual style that you will find among Romance books. They are quite often made up of many photographs and have a lot of visual effects to create a cohesive and professional looking product.

Here I will attempt to recreate this style and show that it’s not that hard to make your own. Below are steps for fictional book Love After Dark by Joe Johnson.

Part 2: A Simple Erotica eBook Cover

Now we will go through the process of creating a simple, elegant and (hopefully) eye-catching cover for an erotica story. For this example we will be creating a cover for a fictional title Taking Him Raw by Joe Johnson.

Erotica Genre Conventions

When creating an erotica ebook cover you have to be mindful of what readers expect and also to represent what you are selling. In the erotic genre you want a stock image that exudes sex. So make sure you pick something that no only encapsulates your story but will get a reader hooked.

There are a few things to take into consideration though. Anything too graphic will get you banned or filtered on Amazon. There are a number of no-nos when it comes to creating erotica covers and you will find a good run-down here.

The idea for this erotica cover is to be big, bold and sexy.
